Rani Mukerji is born on 21st March 1978 in Kolkata, is one of the top actresses of Bollywood.
She comes from a filmy background. Her father is film director Ram Mukherji who has now retired and her mother is a playback singer of yesteryear Krishna Mukherjee. Rani Mukherjee has numerous relatives who are associated with the film industry. Notable among them beside her father and mother are film actresses Debashree Roy her maternal aunt, Kajol, Tanuja, Sharbani Mukherji and Ayan Mukerji (is the writer and director of Wake Up Sid) her cousins. Her brother Raja Mukherjee is also a film director.
Rani spent her childhood in Mumbai and completed her education from Maneckjee Cooper High School in Juhu, Mumbai. After she came out from the school, immediately she started receiving the offers from the film producers. At this point of time she was just 17 years old.
Rani Mukherji's first faced the cameras when she was fourteen years old in a brief appearance in her father’s Bengali film Biyer Phool in 1992.
Her Bollywood debut in the low-budget production Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and in the Bengali films with the home production Biyer Phool. Both the films were released in the year 1996. The Hindi film did not performed well in the box office but her Bengali venture was able to sustain in the box office and can't be termed a flop.
But after the release of the Ghulam she immediately caught the attention of the media and the public. Mukerji had her first commercial success with Karan Johar's romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, her biggest commercial success so far, and won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in the film. It brought her stardom overnight. Then, she was offered a number of promising roles.
She later starred in several films, most of which fared below expectations, but in 2002 she re-invented her image with the critically acclaimed drama Saathiya, for which she received numerous awards and nominations.
In 2003, Mukerji's first release was Aziz Mirza's drama Chalte Chalte opposite Shahrukh Khan. The film saw her play a similar role to that of Saathiya, and she received her second nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award.
Since the year 2004 her career graph soared to the new heights every passing year in the year 2005 she was at her best while portraying the deaf and dumb girl in the movie Black. For this film she got all major awards and the film was critically acclaimed also. In this year another film Bunti Aur Babli portrayed her ability to tickle the ribs of the public and her sense of timing. Many times she performed on the stage most of time with her co-stars.
Mukerji changed the English transliteration of her surname from Mukherjee to Mukerji several years ago. At the time, it was reported that she did this for numerological reasons. In 2006, Mukerji stated that numerology was not a concern; her name had been put down as Mukerji on her passport, and she wanted to be consistent.

She has done quite a number of films with the best directors of the industry like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar and B. R. Chopra.
In the year 2000, she was drawn into the controversies due to the Kiss with Kamalhassan in the film "Hey Ram". Rani was rumoured to have dated her co-stars Govinda, Aamir Khan and Abhishek Bacchan.
Recently, Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan have pulled off a new feat in front of media cameras. Rani and Vidya have kissed on film while they were in dulged in a freewheeling chat. They both work together in a film no one killed Jessica.
During the promotion of this movie they both kissed each other on a show at ZOOM Television, & also on stage at IIT College Fest. The videos doing the rounds on the net are evidence of the fact that the earlier warring actresses Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan have kissed and made up, literally!
Rani Mukerji occupied the top slot of Filmfare's 'Top Ten Bollywood Actresses' list for two years in a row (2004–2005). Filmfare Magazine placed her eighth amongst the "Ten Most Powerful Names of Bollywood", an achievement she repeated from the previous year, where she was ranked at number ten. On Women's International Day 2007, Mukerji came in fourth position on the All-Time Best Bollywood Actresses Ever listing.
She was placed at number 36 by UK magazine Eastern Eye as one of "Asia's Sexiest Women" in Sept/2006.
Rani made her entry in to the small screen with the dance reality show Dance Premier League in 2009.
