Vidya Balan Biography



Vidya Balan is an Indian actress, who appears in Bollywood films.

Vidya Balan was born on 1st January, 1978 in Ottapalam, Palakkad District, Kerala in a Tamil speaking Iyer family.

Her father is P. R. Balan (Vice President of ETC Channel) and her mother is a housewife. She has an elder sister, Priya. However, South Indian sexy actress Priyamani is her cousin sister.

She did her schooling at St. Anthony Girls' High School, Chembur, Mumbai, and later attended St. Xavier's College where she majored in Sociology. She went on to study MA at the University of Mumbai, when she got her first film offer.

After graduating in sociology, she began her career starring in many music videos, T.V shows and many commercials, before appearing in movies.


Her acting career started when she signed up for the Malayalam film Chakram, alongside Mohanlal but the film was shelved. After that, she signed on for the Tamil film, Run, but for reasons undisclosed, she was dropped after a first schedule and replaced by Meera Jasmine. When Chakram was restarted with Prithviraj in the lead, Meera Jasmine was chosen ahead of Vidya Balan again.


She then turned to television advertising. From 1998 onwards, she appeared in numerous television ads, many of which were directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She also took supporting roles in music videos, appearing with singers and bands such as Euphoria, Shubha Mudgal, and Pankaj Udhas. Balan also portrayed the role of Radhika Mathur in a few episodes of the later seasons of Hum Paanch.

Finally in 2003, Vidya Balan made her movie debut in the Bengali film, Bhalo Theko, directed by Goutam Halder for which she won the Anandalok Puraskar Best Actress award in Kolkata.


Later in 2005, she made her Bollywood film debut with Parineeta. Her performance in that film was acclaimed by critics, earning her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and a nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award.

She subsequently essayed a variety of character roles, receiving her first commercial success with Rajkumar Hirani's Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006. Once again her performance was well received by critics and the film became the second highest grossing film of that year.

She followed it with Heyy Babyy (2008) and Bhool Bhulaiya (2008),the latter earning her another nomination for a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. In 2009 she appeared in R. Balki's Paa, in a performance that ultimately won her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Recently Vidya Balan link-up Siddharth Roy Kapur-head honcho of UTV Motion pictures. Both Vidya and Siddharth bonded during the filming of ‘No One Killed Jessica’ produced by UTV. Now they often meet each other and spend quality time. In the weekend, Vidya was spotted with Siddharth holidaying in Goa's Bagha beach.


Vidya was earlier linked to her co-stars, Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham and even Sanjay Dutt. But this time, she wants to keeps her affair very secret.

Recently, Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan have pulled off a new feat in front of media cameras. Rani and Vidya have kissed on film while they were in dulged in a freewheeling chat. They both work together in a film no one killed Jessica.

During the promotion of this movie they both kissed each other on a show at ZOOM Television, & also on stage at IIT College Fest. The videos doing the rounds on the net are evidence of the fact that the earlier warring actresses Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan have kissed and made up, literally!

She won Two Awards in 2010. The First Award was Lions Gold Awards, Best Actress, Paa and Second Award was 'FICCI Frames 2010' Excellence Awards: Best Actress for Paa.


The secret marriage between Vidya Balan and Siddharth Roy Kapoor reportedly took place last week of July 2011 and the couple are apparently, already on their honeymoon to an undisclosed location. Vidya, who was once crowned the sexiest vegetarian, had always denied having a relationship with Siddharth Roy Kapoor, who is the head honcho of UTV and had maintained the 'just good friends' stance throughout.

Siddharth has been twice married and Vidya was apparently waiting for the divorce from his second wife to get through before she could embrace the relationship in public.
